Windows 7 edit with vim context menu


















Since gVim has been available for Windows, I have never had any issues running it on my home computer and that Edit with VIM right-click context menu item became my best friend. Until now that is. Windows 7 bit will run gVim as a 32bit application, but the context menu shortcuts are gone.

Here is my workaround. New issue. Jump to bottom. Labels auto-migrated defect Priority-Medium. Copy link. What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? This would make it much easier to find the "Edit with Vim" entry, especially on context menus that have numerous other additional menus, many of which also already have icons.

I have a fix. But I couldn't test it. I had trouble setting up the build environment. Can someone test it for me, please? I have gVim installed. Under Vista and XP, this offered me an addition to either the object context menu of "Edit with gVim", or an addtion to the "Open With" context menu of "gVim".

This would let me send arbitrary files to gVim for editing. Under Windows 7 bit, I have installed gVim -- twice, as it happens -- and there's no menu item. Version 7. Use the "self-installing executable". It should work out of the box on Windows 7 bit. I have gotten it to work on my Windows 7 RC machine. If you want this to work on Windows bit any edition , then follow the Fix Missing GVim Context Menu instructions from the gvim website.

GVim gets installed to "Program Files" as it should, printing works fine, and the integrated menus all work like a charm. Note that properly installing Vim, either from a distributed pre-built installer or using install. Using gvim under Windows, if you move your Vim folder, you will find that "Edit with Vim" is missing from the context menu when you right click a file in Windows Explorer.

This lets you repair the context menu when you install a new Vim, etc. This registry location is not the same as that used by the installer, it takes advantage of the same Windows features used by file associations to set up a global context menu entry for the Vim executable.
