Hide windows 7 partition from xp

So, it was installed in XP, it just applied necessary start-up files in the boot record. As far as the keyboard, check your BIOS usually F2 or DEL when it first starts settings to "emulate usb support" or "usb legacy support" and enable it.

That will allow usb devices to be active during the post and pre OS boot. Office Office Exchange Server. Not an IT pro? Windows Client. Sign in. United States English. Ask a question. There are a total of 2 entries listed in the bootloader.

Default: Windows 7 Timeout: 30 seconds. Terry60 Telephone Sanitizer 2nd Class Staff member. In XP make sure system restore is only turned on for the XP partition and any partition where XP apps are installed if different , then try this registry hack In W7, make sure that system restore is likewise, only on for W7 and its apps. Any partition which is purely user data can be shared, but should not have system restore turned on from either OS. The hack seems to work for most people but not for all - me included.

Treat W7 as "Vista". HnS predates W7 but the bootloaders are the same, so it still works. Thanks Terry I had tried that MountedDevices Offline hack and it didn't work for me either, but then after disparaging MS yesterday with my post above, I re-read their own kb on it this one and decided to try it one last time. And this last time it appears to have worked--can't tell you why, I'm good at following instructions--and now in XP's System Restore setup dialog I see the Windows7 partition is shown as "Offline".

The bad news: somehow all of my XP Restore points went-away with this last "successful" attempt! These are the only drives that need to be monitored by system restore, and in the case of Vista, these are the ones you need to mark as Vista to HnS, so that they are hidden from XP.

It follows therefore that you cannot install 3rd party software on a disk shared between Vista and XP. You can however share data between them on a common partition because system restore will be turned off on this drive and it will therefore contain no system restore folder to be corrupted by XP. Hard drive and partition counts start at 0. Selecting Windows Vista or allowing the boot to default will boot you right into Windows Vista, while choosing Windows XP will transfer control of the bootloader process to NeoGrub.

If you only have one XP installed, it will boot right into it. You want to go back to Vista. You boot the PC. You cannot select Vista from the first menu. Vista is still hidden. The system will reboot, but NeoGrub will unhide the Vista partition s first, and this time , you can select Vista from the first menu.

Glad to hear that you did it and share the experience with us. Office Office Exchange Server. Not an IT pro? Resources for IT Professionals. Sign in. United States English. Ask a question.
