You may need to scroll down to find it. From here, your PC will restart and display the Choose an option screen. You can tell Windows 10 how you want it to boot. Select 4 or press F4 to start in Safe Mode. While there, press and hold Shift while clicking the Power icon and selecting Restart. Your computer will then restart to the Choose an option screen. From there, you can follow the same process as is outlined in the previous step.
If your computer is unusable, force it to shut down by holding down the power button for 10 seconds. After it shuts down, start it back up again by pressing the power button as you normally would. As soon as it shows the first signs of life — a startup chime, a logo on the screen — hold down the power button again for 10 seconds to shut your computer back down.
Repeat this on-off process one more time. When you turn your computer on for the third time, let it fully restart to enter WinRE the Windows Recovery Environment. From there, follow the same steps from the Choose an option screen to select Safe Mode, as outlined above in Option 1.
You may even get lucky and clear up your malware infection before needing to go any further. We suggest clearing all temporary files and emptying your Recycle Bin. After making your selections, click OK. Then click Delete Files to confirm. Avast's free antivirus software thoroughly checks your device for viruses, other types of malware, and a wide range of other risks to your online security and privacy. Now, all you need to do is let Avast Free Antivirus — or your chosen antivirus solution — do its job.
This will allow Avast Free Antivirus to scan and detect malware when your computer restarts. Type cmd and press Enter to open the Command Prompt interface. Then, press the Enter key. As your computer restarts, Avast Free Antivirus will perform a Boot-time Scan to thoroughly check for viruses and other malware. This may take several minutes to complete. Your cybersecurity tool will know how to tell if a file is a virus and how to remove a virus from a file without deleting it.
However, many viruses can and will cause direct harm to your software and files. You can attempt to recover them with a backup.
Having an up-to-date backup on either an external drive or a cloud server is one of the best protections you can give yourself against viruses — aside from an antivirus tool, of course. Head to the Control Panel via the Start menu in the lower-left corner of your screen. Click Restore my files to get your files back. You can restore the entire backup by selecting Browse for folders. Click Next to continue. Tell Windows where to put the restored files. If you want everything exactly as it was, choose In the original location , then click Restore.
If Windows detects that the original files are still on your computer, you can choose to replace them or leave them uncopied.
When the restoration is complete, click Finish to conclude the process. None of the antivirus programs will be able to run correctly in such conditions. Safe Mode allows you to ignore the changes that malware did to your PC. Hence, malware will not be able to affect the antivirus program job — in either direct way or through the changes in system settings.
Sure, such a system mode is not comfortable for everyday use — but who said that a special troubleshooting mode can be used for a regular job? Since the appearance of this ability in Windows 7, the access to this system mode and its appearance have changed two times. In that window, opt on the Safe Mode with suboption Minimal. Press Apply and OK to save the choice. Then, the system will offer you to reboot the computer — in order for the changes to take effect.
Apply this action — and you will be booted just to the needed system mode. Choose Safe Mode with Networking and proceed to malware removal. As I have mentioned, Safe Mode disables most of the Windows Services, leaving only ones that are crucial for system work.
The problem is that Windows Defender is disabled in Safe Mode, too. You cannot wake it up until you boot your PC into a normal Windows mode. To remove malware in that system mode, you need to have a separate anti-malware program installed. Click OK , then click Delete Files when prompted. Download and extract Autoruns. Autoruns is a Microsoft tool that shows you the various programs that started up with your current session. Click the Download Autoruns and Autorunsc link near the top of the page.
Double-click the downloaded ZIP folder. Click Extract all , then click Extract when prompted. Open the extracted folder, then double-click the Autoruns file to open Autoruns.
Use Autoruns to delete malicious files. Autoruns will give you a list of automatic startup processes and files that appeared when you started your computer. You can use this list to determine which of the services are actually viruses: Find a suspicious service in the Autoruns list. Look up the service online to confirm that it is a virus, making sure to note any removal instructions.
Delete the service and any files or folders related to it. Repeat this process until you've removed all of the suspicious services from the Autoruns menu. Restart Windows. You can now restart Windows safely to regular mode. Just click the Start menu, select the Power option, and choose Restart.
Change your browsers' home pages if necessary. A common virus strategy is to set your browser's home page to a malicious or ad-based website. You can change your browser's settings back to normal while in Safe Mode to prevent this from causing further harm.
In extreme cases, your computer's virus will corrupt the browser's files so that it can't be changed from within the browser settings. If so, you'll need to uninstall the browser in question and then reinstall it later. Run a Malwarebytes malware scan. If you're still having trouble, try using the free trial version of Malwarebytes' powerful antimalware application to see if it can find anything Microsoft Defender couldn't.
Once it's downloaded, double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to scan your PC. If Malwarebytes finds a virus or other harmful files, it will walk you through the removal process.
Reinstall Windows if necessary. If you can't get rid of the virus and you're unable to pay for a professional repair service to neutralize it, your best remaining option is to reinstall Windows and start over. You can back up your files to prevent data loss, but keep in mind that doing this will most likely back up the virus as well.
If you can afford it, take your computer into a professional repair service before this step. They may be able to remove the virus for you. Method 2. Force-quit persistent malware programs.
